Interview - Know The Origin

Why do you think it is important to know the origin of your clothing?

I think it’s the only way to truly know how your clothes are made, and whether their production supports or exploits the people and environment involved!

After the Rana Plaza disaster do you feel people still aren't paying enough attention to garment workers rights?

Rana Plaza was so devastating that it really brought people’s attention towards the fashion industry. The result of this meant that there is definitely a movement of people fighting for garment workers rights. However, much more needs to be done and we need more and more people involved to stand in solidarity with garment workers.

Why do you think ethical clothing is not yet in the mainstream?

2 words come to mind when you talk about ethical clothing: ugly and expensive. This reputation is really holding ethical clothing back. People don’t want to compromise on style, and they shouldn’t have to! That is why Know The Origin aims to be stylish, affordable and ethical! It’s the only way to bring ethical clothing into the mainstream.

What do you think needs to be done in order to get rid of mislead the hippy/hemp stereotype that goes alongside ethical clothing?

More brands need to take on ethical values. Ethical clothing shouldn’t be a niche title assigned to hemp clothing being woven in a yurt! It should be the standard for all fashion - no matter what style

Could you describe the KTO collections and describe the type of person you could see wearing your pieces?

So the first KTO collection is called the Foundation Set. It is a collection of stylish basics designed to be the basis of any ethical wardrobe. Layers for winter that can be transformed into statement stand-alones for summer. The people we attract tend to be uncompromising in both their love of style and the values they share with us, joy and respect for people and the environment.
